Section 2: Selecting Plants

Lesson 1: Factors to Selecting Plants

In Section 1 of this unit, we learned about the three major approaches for producing a plant commodity. Regardless of which of the three methods used, in order to produce and propagate plants successfully, it is essential to select seeds or plants that are appropriate for your region.

There are four major factors that will influence your selection of an appropriate plant commodity:

  • the climatic conditions of your particular area

  • the selection of your plant propagation methods (e.g., using heritage seeds, and hybrids)

  • the availability of resources for supplying you with your desired product (e.g., acquiring seeds, bedding plants, and appropriate growth materials)

  • being aware of, and knowing about plants; being able to identify them using common names and scientific names
We will consider each of these four factors in greater detail.
