Section 3: Safety Practices

Lesson 4: Storing Chemicals

Chemicals are dangerous enough to keep under lock and key. The whole point of a storage facility is to prevent accidental contact by children, pets, livestock, etc.
When storing chemicals, here are some precautions that should be taken:

  • Chemicals must be stored in properly labeled, closed containers. Partially used products are also stored in their original, closed containers.
  • The storage area must be locked and ventilated.
  • Utensils and containers used for mixing must also be locked.
  • Visitors, children, and animals must be kept away from the storage area.
  • The storage facility must be identified with a sign.
  • Appropriate fire extinguishers must be available outside the storage area.
  • There must be no flammable material (such as dry grass) near the storage site.
  • Absorbent material (sawdust, sand, soil, etc.) must be available in case of a spill.

An inventory of all chemicals in storage should be posted - and kept up to date!
