Lesson 1: Basic Competencies

Any occupation that you enter, will require you to have specific skills related to that particular job.
That's why you acquire the necessary education, training, or on-the-job learning.

In addition to having the specific skills for a job, you will also need to have certain basic competencies that are needed to perform your job proficiently.

These basic competencies are necessary not only for your work life, but also for dealing capably with all aspects of your personal life.

Everything you do, from infancy to adulthood, helps you develop your basic competencies. That's why it's so important to always try your best.

Not only will you be rewarded because of increased success, but the basic competencies that you develop will be beneficial in all your future endeavors.
These basic competencies are generally categorized into three classes of skills:

  • fundamental skills
  • personal management skills
  • teamwork skills

Here's a breakdown of the three classes of skills that comprise your basic personal competencies;
as you read each one, think about how you demonstrated these competencies as you worked through this course.

Fundamental Skills

  • How did you communicate in this course?
  • Who did you communicate with?  Other students? Teachers?
  • Did you communicate in a respectful tone and manner?
  • Did you communicate appropriately, depending on the situation?
  • How did you manage the information in this course?
  • Did you use the appropriate technology to find information?
  • Did you use the information you gathered to draw conclusions?
  • Did you use any charts or statistics in this course?
  • Did you have to do any calculations?
  • Did you assess different situations?
  • Did you identify any problems?  How did you resolve those problems?
  • Did you look at solutions in new and different ways?

Personal Management Skills

  • Did you put forth your best effort on the quizzes and assignments?
  • Did you demonstrate a positive attitude?
  • Did you pay attention to detail?
  • Did you persist when things didn't go as planned?
  • Did you manage your time well?  Or did you run out of time and have to scramble at the end?
  • Were you responsible for the work you completed?
  • Did you try different ways to accomplish the results you wanted?
  • If one method didn't work, did you try other methods?
  • Did the course interest you enough to want to learn more?
  • Did you learn new things in the course?
  • Did you protect your work on the computer?
  • Did you encounter any risks such as spending too much time on the computer?
  • Did you use good posture while on the computer?
  • Did you ensure all computer cords were tied together or taped to the floor to avoid tripping?


Teamwork skills

 
  • Did you collaborate with other students? Your teachers? Your marker?
  • Did you share information and encourage others to do the same?
  • Did you work effectively by recognizing the different personalities in the group?
  • Did you complete all the requirements of the course?
  • Did you set a timeline and meet the dates in that timeline?
  • Did you have a deadline and did you complete the course within that deadline?
