Lesson 9: Global Appeal

Trip Advisor

As you might know, TripAdvisor is the world's largest travel site on the Internet. It enables travellers to research, review, and book many aspects of upcoming trips. At last count, TripAdvisor has posted 600 million reviews resulting in the world's largest selection of travel review listings. This covers 7.5 million accommodations, airlines, attractions, and restaurants. The reviews help tourist decide where to stay, how to fly, what to do, and where to eat. And here's the best part . . . the reviews are directly from other travellers, not from paid, solicited travel agents.

Positive TripAdvisor reviews and ratings are sought after by the tourist industry. If you don't believe this, check for yourself. Next time you go into a restaurant or tourist attraction do two things:

  1.  Check for reviews online before you arrive at the site. Chances are the top search hits are TripAdvisor.
  2.  Look for a TripAdvisor star rating certification AT the tourist attraction. If their ratings are favourable, establishments will likely display a poster endorsement.

Take a little tour of . . .

Blogs

Travel Blogger is actually a real job! Here are a few blogs that do a wonderful job of sharing their travel adventures (Try not to get too absorbed in their travel experiences. Just remember to come back to this course!):

  1. Breathe Dream Go
  2. The Barefoot Nomad
  3. Hike Bike Travel

Video Blog's (Vlog)

Travellers love to share their videos. Video Blogs (Vlogs) are increasingly popular and a fun way to view an attraction and get a real feeling for the experience. An example is the video on the right, from Expert Vagabond, about their 8-day road trip across Vancouver Island.

What's the downside?  Advertisements of course.  This is one way vloggers make their money. You will notice that this vlog includes advertisements.

Watch the video on the left to see a vlog in action that reviews Vancouver Island.

This second video is a glimpse into Mile30 Adventure's world travel adventures.

Watch the vlog on the left to see Justin's experience. Maybe it will encourage you to travel
up north.

This last video was produced by Backpacker Steve, a German videographer who logs his travel adventures around the world.

Watch the video on the left and you can see what Steve thought about Newfoundland and Labrador.
