Unit 2

Destination Planning

"If you don't know where you are going, you'll end up someplace else."~ Yogi Berra

The destination management industry recognizes that tourism must be developed and managed in a controlled, integrated, and sustainable manner, centered on sound planning. By using this approach, tourism can generate substantial economic benefits to an area minimizing serious problems.

Destinations that allow tourism to develop without the benefit of planning often suffer from environmental and social problems. These may be detrimental to residents as well as unpleasant for tourists, resulting in marketing difficulties and decreasing economic benefits.

Throughout the three lessons within Unit 2: Destination Planning, we will learn about the steps involved in planning a destination.
