Passport to Adventure

"I look out the window and I see the lights and the skyline and the people on the street rushing around looking for action, love, and the world's greatest chocolate chip cookie, and my heart does a little dance." ~ Nora Ephron

If you've ever been to New York City, you know that car horn honking in your ears is part of life. Some say that blowing the horn is a fact of life in NYC as it's part of the fabric and culture of the city. But did you know that even though everyone in New York does it, honking your horn in New York is actually illegal with a fine of $350? City officials, however, have basically given up the fight and the city has now removed all Don't Honk signs from the street.

Where in the World

New York City is located on the Northeastern coast of the United States. Nestled at the mouth of the Hudson River, it is in the southeastern portion of New York State. The city's land area is estimated to be 321 square miles (830 square km). NYC is composed of five boroughs:

  1. Manhattan (an island)
  2. Staten Island (yup, you guessed it; this is an island as well)
  3. Brooklyn
  4. Queens
  5. Bronx

What to See

Attractions

There is so much to see and do in New York City, you could spend years there and still not get it all in. If you are a first-time NYC tourist, there are a few top attractions to be included in your itinerary.

  • Empire State Building ~ Midtown's world-famous art deco landmark is the Empire State Building.
  • One World Observatory, 9/11 Memorial & Museum ~ This iconic building was built at the previous Twin Towers location to memorialize 9/11.
  • Top of the Rock ~ The Top floor of Rockefellar Plaza has an amazing view of Central Park. Rockefellar Center, in front of the plaza, hosts an annual elaborate Christmas tree, seasonal ice-skating rink, and serves as the entrance to popular NBC shows.
  • Times Square ~ The neon glow of Times Square shines 24/7. Warning: it is busy but definitely quite a display.
  • Central Park ~ In the middle of Manhattan is a refuge from all the steel and concrete, called Central Park. It is definitely the world's most famous urban park.
  • Statue of Liberty ~ A short ferry ride brings you to this iconic monument that welcomed generations of immigrants to American shores.
  • Brooklyn Bridge ~ This picturesque bridge is pedestrian, bike, and car friendly giving you a fun, scenic way to travel between Manhattan and Brooklyn.
  • The High Line ~ An abandoned rail-line turned elevated park, the High Line is an innovative way NY is continually transforming and infusing nature into the city.

What to Do

Enjoy Some Arts & Culture

  • St. Patrick's Cathedral ~ This neo-Gothic church has been recently renovated but it is the sense of awe and wonder when you enter that is memorable.
  • Shopping ~ Is that culture? Well, in New York it certainly is.
  • Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts ~ This mecca of culture is home to the NYC Ballet, Met Opera, and NY Philharmonic.

Visit a Museum or Art Gallery

  • The Met ~ This gallery is home to nearly 2 million works of art from five millennia of human history.
  • Museum of Modern Art (MoMA for short) ~ located in Midtown Manhattan, MoMA includes modern works from Andy Warhol, Pablo Picasso, Claude Monet, and Vincent van Gogh.

Watch a Broadway Play

There is no experience like watching live theatre on Broadway. The world's greatest talents come together and put on amazing shows. This is one of my favourite things to do in NYC!

Take in a World Class Sporting Event

  • Yankee Stadium ~ The Bronx is home to the NY Yankees. A quick subway ride will take you out to the ballgame.
  • Madision Square Garden ~ In the heart of Manhattan, lies the home arena for the NBC Knicks, WNBA Liberty basketball, and the NHL Rangers hockey teams as well as big-name concerts.
