Collaboration Presentation

Collaboration: Coming together is a beginning; keeping together is progress; working together is success.
~ Henry Ford

Why Collaborate Online?

  • Why not? Working with your fellow classmates helps you to feel connected, which is so important in the virtual world.

  • Getting to know other students in your class allows you the opportunity to ask for help from someone other than your instructor when he or she is unavailable.

  • Working in teams is a skill you will be expected to have in the workplace. And often this may be in the form of virtual team work.

  • Two brains are always better than one. Everyone learns more when they come together and work as a team.

Types of Collaboration

  • Synchronous: communication that occurs at the same time or in real time. Some examples would include instant messaging, in a live chat room, in a web conference or even talking on the phone.

  • Asynchronous: communicating that does not occur at the same time. Some examples would include the use of a discussion board or e-mail.

  • Discussion Posts / Forums
  • Surveys

      Netiquette

Etiquette is perhaps just as important as "real world manners". Netiquette rules are necessary because readers draw inferences from your words rather than nonverbal body language. Here are some guidelines:

      • Online communication should be written in a more formal manner than instant messaging, but not as rigid as a business letter.

      • Use proper grammar and punctuation.

      • Do not capitalize all letters: this means you are shouting.

      • Refrain from using abbreviations: their meaning may not be clear.

      • Emoticons are OK, but there no substitute for writing well.

      • Always sign your first and last name so the read knows who they are communicating with.

      • Do not send chain letters or spam material of any nature to your teachers or fellow students.

      • Finally, think before you send as you cannot un-send.

      Discussion Guidelines

      • Prepare before participating: familiarize yourself with the topic.

      • Abide by Rules of Netiquette.

      • Do not use slang, profanity, or potentially offensive language.

      • Reread your posting before submitting.

      • Respect the opinion of others.

      • Be courteous when offering feedback to a fellow student.

      • Use students' names when responding to their postings.

      • Be gracious when receiving feedback from another student.

Tips for Being an Effective Team Member

      • Check your course email regularly: twice a week at a minimum is suggested.

      • Reply on time to emails.

      • Meet your deadlines.

      • Fully participate. Always give your best effort.

      • Be a good communicator.

      • Keep up that positive attitude.

      • Good luck to all of you!
