• Use titles and illustrations to understand the text: Before you begin to read use prior knowledge to predict what information may be in the text by looking at the title of the text and the pictures. Scroll down and watch the vocabulary slide show before reading the text. 

  • Skimming/scanning: before reading the text, skim or scan the text and try to make some safe general assumptions about what the text is about by looking for familiar vocabulary. 

  • Be aware of the reading process: Try to talk to yourself and ask yourself comprehension questions such as: Do I really understand that sentence? 

  • Guessing word meanings: Take a chance at guessing what a word means by looking at the context where the word is found.
