Writing

As you have seen from your readings of the poems, they are compact yet complex. Powerful and meaningful messages are conveyed through the use of precise wording, imagery (words that appeal to our senses), poetic devices and figures of speech. There is an assumption that all poems must rhyme, but that is not accurate. Not all of the poems you read rhymed, though they did have a rhythm. Keep that in mind moving forward.

Your next assignment is going to have you create your own poem. When you do so, consider the 3.1 Poetry Chart. How will you
  • Convey emotions?
  • Convey your big idea?
  • Make the poem come to life?
  • Manipulate the format of your poem?
  • Use sound?
A component of this assignment will be to write a paragraph reflecting on your choices in making the poem as well as how you made use of poetic devices to engage your reader. Before you begin, review your notes on poetic devices and figures of speech and make deliberate choices to convey the above points through the language, format, and sound. If you're not sure what I'm referring to, go back to the 3.1 Poetry Response page and review the Poetry tutorial.
