Time to Choose Your Novel for Unit 3 Work!

Later in the course for your Unit 3 novel work,you will study one of the following novels. You will use  essential questions to connect one of the novels and apply these same questions to your own understanding of yourself. Whether you plan to begin reading your course novel now, or later, you still need to make your novel choice now, if you have not already done so. This will ensure that you definitely have the novel in your possession, so you are ready to begin reading!

Deathwatch, by Robb White:  Deathwatch is a fast-paced story. As a central issue, it has a life and death struggle between two men, "the hunter and the hunted," and is set in the burning heat of the desert. The characters are believable and interesting. Their struggle proves even more exciting because not only must they compete against each other, but they must survive the dangers of the desert.

A Monster Calls, by Patrick Ness:  A Monster Calls is a fantasy novel. The protagonist, Conor O’Malley, is a 13-year-old boy struggling with his mom’s terminal cancer. His grandmother, who he has little in common with, tries to mother him, and his father lives too far away to help, leaving Conor feeling alone and helpless. Making his life more difficult is the fact that Harry and his buddies bully Conor almost daily at school. Conor feels alone and helpless, but finds the confidence and courage to go on through β€œa monster."

Speak, by Laurie Halse Anderson:  Speak is a mature novel about a grade nine student attempting to deal with the trauma of rape. Melinda Sordino, the main character, is struggling with depression and fitting into high school. Confronting her fears allows Melinda to stand up for the injustice she has experienced. The narrator takes the reader on a difficult but inspirational journey. (This novel has mature content.)

The Secret Life of Bees, by Sue Monk Kidd:  Lily Owens lives on a farm in South Carolina. The death of her mother, when Lily was four, devastated and forever shaped her life.  The setting of the novel is during the Civil Rights era, where racial violence explodes across the country. Rosaleen, Lily's housekeeper, who cares for her, is a victim of this violence, causing the two to leave town in search of information about Lily's mother. The story reveals the search for identity and a sense of belonging during this difficult time.
