Introduction to your Novel Study

Congratulations! You are ready to begin reading your novel for this course! There will be no short note assignment pages provided for this unit. Instead, you will be required to keep short notes from your novel as you read. This is very important to help you gain a better understanding of your novel, as well as to prepare you to find necessary information out of the extended text to do your assigned novel work.

Very likely, you have a fairly strong sense of who you are. You know what is important to you, and you are aware of the people you value in your life. You may have some ideas of what you would like to become in the future. You may have career goals, relationship goals, and spiritual goals. Your goals are influenced by the people around you, by your surroundings, and, of course, by your own personal motivation. Characters in the novel you will study are not much different. They are living their lives in the present, and are intent on making the most of their futures.

You may have begun your novel reading earlier in the course, or you might be actually beginning Unit 3 work. Regardless of when you are beginning to read your novel you will need to plan an effective reading schedule that will address your own reading speed, your own reading habits, and your goal date for finishing your novel reading. The novels range from 200-300 pages each, so plan accordingly.

Step 1:    Make a reading schedule that will help you to complete your novel according to your completion goal.

Step 2:    Read the "Annotating Your Novel" information page.

Step 3:    Review assignment 6.1 Elements of the Novel - Study Guide to learn about the requirements and expectations of this major novel assignment work.

Step 4:    Read and annotate your chosen novel. This will be done on your own paper and /or sticky notes.

Keep your eye on the goal!
