Lesson 1 — Activity 1: Elements of Communication

To communicate is to give information about something to someone by speaking, writing, or representing. You communicate to get someone to understand your thoughts and feelings.

Communication allows us to express ourselves to others. Think of all the forms that communication can take. We speak, listen, view, read, and write.

We also can represent in many different ways. Think of painting, singing, acting, performing music, drumming, designing — the ways we communicate are endless.

The picture on the left shows two people talking on the phone. The woman on the left (the sender) might be calling her boyfriend (the receiver) to tell him that she's missing him and wishes he could travel to her city to visit (the message). The sender has a message to communicate with the receiver.

The process of communication is reversed when the receiver decides to reply to the message.
For example, the girl’s boyfriend could say he understands how she feels and tell her that he will try to come to see her soon.

When describing communication, we use the word feedback for the reply. Feedback is a way of making sure the sender and receiver have understood the message

Difficulties might arise if the receiver did not give feedback and the message was then not understood correctly!
