Lesson 3 β Activity 3: Writing a Paragraph
When we write to send a message to our audience, we also have to make sure our message is clearly organized and that the language suits the audience.
The most common format for a written message is the paragraph. Every paragraph has the same basic structure, and we can use this structure to be sure our information is arranged logically.
The chart below explains how to organize a paragraph.
| Element of the Paragraph | Purpose of the Element | Example |
| topic sentence | to introduce your topic and to interest your audience | Every child should see these two movies. |
| first supporting idea or example | to help support the topic sentence | Frozen is a movie about discovering oneβs identity. |
| second supporting idea or example | to help support the topic sentence | Toy Story is a wonderful tale of friendship. |
| third supporting idea or example | to help support the topic sentence | Each movie, though animated, has real life values that children will relate to easily. |
| concluding (closing) sentence | to review the topic sentence and to summarize the paragraph | No home video library is complete without these two excellent children's movies. |
Some paragraphs may include more details to support each main point, but this is a simple pattern to follow to write a clear, organized paragraph.
