Lesson 3 β Activity 4: Representing
To communicate, we often think of speaking, but representing messages through pictures or symbols is quite common, too.
Representing is a way of sending messages visually rather than verbally. We can say itβs a form on non-verbal communication.
Representing includes creating art such as drawings, photos, paintings, and sculptures. Gestures, facial expressions, and body language are also types of representation.

It is useful to communicate through representation when we might have obstacles that interfere with our verbal messages.
For example, we would use representation when we are with people from another culture who speak a different language than we do. We may also use representation when we are with someone who has difficulty hearing well. You are representing
when you make non-verbal signals to your friend across the room.
Symbols are often used in visual communication and are pictures that represent ideas.
What do you think are the ideas that this symbol represents?
