Lesson 4 — Activity 1: Active Listening

To communicate successfully, you know that the sender has to do many things. The receiver must also be part of the process. One way in which the receiver can improve communication is by being an active listener.

An active listener thinks about the message being sent. We need to participate in communication, not just when sending messages, but also when receiving messages.

Improving our listening skills makes it easier to communicate with others. If we try to pay attention to the sender and ask questions when we are unsure or confused, we will receive messages successfully.

Here are the steps to follow to be an active listener:

Pay Attention:
  • Look at the speaker.
  • "Listen” to the speaker’s body language.
  • Put aside any distracting thoughts or what’s happening around you.

Show that You Are Listening:
  • Nod occasionally.
  • Smile and use other facial expressions.
  • Use encouraging comments such as “yes” and “I understand.”

Provide Feedback:
  • Reflect back what was said by saying “What I’m hearing you say is ...” or “Sounds like you’re saying.”
  • Ask questions to make sure you understand.
  • Summarize what the speaker said occasionally.

Don’t Judge
:
  • Allow the speaker to finish before asking questions you may have.
  • Don’t interrupt with your own arguments or points.

Respond Appropriately
:
  • Be open and honest when it’s your turn to respond.
  • Be respectful when you offer your opinion.
