When you talk with other people, your voice does not always sound exactly the same. You will change the speed of your speech as well as the tone and volume of your voice. We may not often think consciously about these characteristics of our voices, but they can certainly influence communication.

The speed or pace at which we speak has a lot to do with how we feel about what we are sharing. If we are very excited, we may speak very quickly. If we are a bit confused or unsure about the message we are sending, we may speak more slowly and pause often.

When we emphasize various words in sentences by saying them more loudly or stressing them more than other words, we influence the meaning of the sentence.

We usually change the tone of our voice when we are speaking with others.

For instance, we might say to a child, "No! You can't have the last candy in the dish!" and use an angry voice. The child will certainly hesitate before taking the candy, and she may begin to cry because your tone frightened her!

However, if we are teasing the child and say it with a smile, the child will know that we are joking because the tone of our voice is friendly.

Another vocal characteristic that we change according to the situation is the volume.

For example, if we are angry with someone, we may speak more loudly than we would normally. If we want to tell someone something that is private, we will speak very quietly.

When we are at work, we need to think more consciously about the speed, tone, and volume of our voices. We want to be very sure that we are communicating appropriately for the situation.
