Lesson 11 β€” Activity 2: Writing Paragraphs

As you learned in Theme 1 β€” Lesson 3, the paragraph follows a very simple pattern that can be used to write about any topic.

Remember that a paragraph follows this format:

  • State the topic in the first sentence.

  • Provide two or three ideas and/or details to support the topic in the next two or three sentences. Depending on the topic, you may have more detail sentences.

  • Summarize what you have said about the topic in the last sentence.

Of course, the pattern of the paragraph may vary as you write, but using this structure helps the writer to stay focused on the topic and to give the ideas the support they need to make sense.

Here’s an example of the paragraph pattern:

A girl named Cara Wilson helped me adjust to being the new kid at school.
For the first four days at Deer Ridge High, I was completely alone. I don’t think I spoke to a single person. Then at lunch on the fifth day, Cara Wilson walked by her regular table and sat down next to me. I had already figured out she was a pretty popular person. Soon all of her friends were sitting there too. Now I did not become great friends with her, but after that, it seemed like all sorts of kids wanted to get to know me. I think Cara knew what she was doing.
She helped me a lot and I have great respect for Cara.
