Lesson 11 — Activity 3: Essay Structure

The structure of the essay is very similar to the structure of the paragraph. In fact, after you have perfected writing a paragraph, it will not too hard to write five paragraphs and put them together to make an essay.

The major difference between the paragraph and the essay is that the essay is longer. Like the short story compared to the novel, the essay allows the writer to include more details than he could include in a paragraph.

The essay structure follows this basic format:

  • Introduction: In the opening paragraph, the topic of the essay is introduced, and the three main points that will support the topic are stated. You might want to start with a sentence that gets your readers' attention about the topic.
  • Body of the essay: Three paragraphs (usually) make up the body of the essay. One paragraph describes each of the three main points. Follow the instructions for paragraphs in L11 — A2 when writing your body paragraphs.
  • Conclusion: Like the concluding sentence of a paragraph, the concluding paragraph of the essay summarizes the points that have been made to support the topic of the essay. This is the writer's last chance to make the point, so think of a way to end on a strong note!
