Lesson 12 — Activity 2: Advertising and Emotion 


Advertisers study human nature or psychology to see how they can influence us to buy their products.

As a result, many ads are designed to make us think that we can be popular, attractive, successful, respected, and so on ... if we buy a certain product.

To help us be aware of how advertisers sometimes try to sell different products, here are some techniques that advertisers use to appeal to our emotions:


Bandwagon: The ad suggests that "everyone is doing it," so we should, too.

Happy Family: The ad shows a family spending time together.

Health: The ad shows healthy, active people with the product.

 Snob Appeal: The ad uses glamorous people or settings.

Sex Appeal: The ad appeals to our desire to be attractive to others by using attractive models.

Fear: The ad plays on people's fears about climate change.

Patriotism: The ad suggests that buying the product shows our love for our country.
