Lesson 21 — Activity 3: After the Interview
After you have made it through the interview, there is more to do than sit and wait for the employer to call and offer you a job! Here are some suggestions of things to do after the interview:
1. Learn from the interview experience. Think about the interview:
- What did you do well?
- What could you improve on?
- What things could you do differently next time?
- What skills should you improve or develop?
- What questions should you think of to be prepared better for another interview?
2. Contact the employer. You may choose to phone the employer, send a
thank you card, or contact the employer by e-mail after the interview for several reasons:
- To thank the employer for taking time to meet with you.
- To remind the employer of your valuable skills.
- To check with the employer to see if a decision has been made about the job.
An example of the type of note you might send to thank an employer for an interview is given here:
You could hand write the note if your writing is neat or you could type it — but sign your name! The advantage of a note over a phone call is that it is a more visible reminder of you than a phone message. As well, the employer can read it any time, but a phone call might interrupt the employer at work.
