Lesson 23 — Activity 2: Respecting Ideas

We may not always agree with the ideas of others. Although we may find that their ideas or opinions are not always based on sound arguments or facts, we still need to be respectful of their right to express themselves, unless, of course, their ideas are hateful or discriminatory. In the workplace, which is a more formal setting than most, we may need to work at accepting the points of view of others to reduce or avoid unnecessary conflict.

We may define respect as treating others the way we would like to be treated. We would likely feel respected in the workplace if others:

  • ask us for our ideas and opinions and take us seriously

  • answer our questions and explain decisions reasonably and honestly

  • make decisions that affect us only after asking for our input

  • try to understand us and do not make assumptions about us or stereotype us

  • respect our privacy

  • allow us some freedom to try things our own way

If we keep these ideas in mind, we may more easily respect our employers, co-workers, and customers.
