Lesson 23 — Activity 3: Discussing Ideas

If we are able to analyze a message to see if it is reasonable and to be able to respect the message, we will then be able to discuss the message. In the workplace or in any situation where we deal with others, the better we are able to apply our communication skills, the easier it will be to accomplish our task.

To contribute positively to meetings or assignments where we need to plan and work with others and come to a consensus or agreement on an issue, the following communication skills are valuable:

  • Listen carefully to everyone's ideas.

  • Ask questions to be sure we understand everyone's ideas.

  • Express ourselves clearly when sharing our own ideas.

  • Write ideas and information accurately.

As part of the concept of respect, we need to get along with our co-workers on group projects. We need to participate actively in the process and encourage our co-workers to do the same. When we agree with an idea, we need to let the group know. When we disagree, we need to do so politely and with valid reasons.

We need to respect the fact that group members may be disappointed if their ideas are not used, and we need to be flexible enough to give up some of our own ideas while keeping in mind that the success of the project is our ultimate responsibility.
