Lesson 27 — Activity 2: Chapter 15 (pages 92 – 96)

Please read Chapter 15 of the novel (pages 92 – 96).

Chapter 15 presented the climax of the story. The climax was the point where Rennie had to decide what to do about the lie about Julie's bracelet that had been troubling her for so long.

The chapter began with Rennie thinking a lot about Papa. She thought about how angry he would be if knew she had lied and how proud he would be of her work in the garden and baking bread.

At school, the children were shown a film about the war.

After the film, some of the children boasted about their older brothers who were soldiers. Giorgio, Rennie's friend, spoke up and asked if the soldiers would be proud to fight for a country that had put men like his father out of work or men like Rennie's father in prison just because they were Italian. When Julie said that her brother would never hurt good people, Rennie asked, "What did my father ever do that's bad?"

The two girls talked for a moment. Rennie told Julie she knew her brother was a good person, and Julie told Rennie that she was afraid Tom will die because she lost his bracelet. Rennie decided she had to return the bracelet, so as soon as she got home, she went to the garden. Robbie, however, came to help her, and found the bracelet.

The chapter ended with Mama confronting Rennie and Rennie grieving over the lie she had hidden all summer.
