Lesson 29 — Activity 1: Thinking about Research

The novel The Lie that Had to Be deals with many interesting ideas. Although the novel is a work of fiction, the author set the story in a particular time and place for a reason. She wanted to tell her readers about the situation Italian Canadians faced during World War II.

To tell her story, Sharon Gibson Palermo likely had to do some research to be sure that the novel was accurate when she was referring to actual events in history. If her story was to be believable, she had to know the facts of the internment of Italian Canadians during World War II.

The remainder of the lessons in this theme deal with some of the ways of doing research. Some of the issues addressed in the story will help you think of ideas that you need to learn more about to write a short report.

Sometimes when you are doing a research report, you will have a topic assigned. Sometimes you will be able to choose the topic you want to write about. In either case, you will still need to spend some time thinking about your topic and deciding which ideas to include or develop in your report.

Brainstorming, as the name suggests, is a technique for getting as many of our ideas as possible down on paper so we can choose the best idea from them to write a report that will be interesting for the writer and reader.

Brainstorming can be done in several ways. You might just jot ideas about the topic down as they come to mind, or you might use a web similar to this one below to sort out your ideas.
