Lesson 35 — Activity 1: Thinking about Research

The novel you have read in this theme deals with many interesting ideas. You probably have read other novels with very interesting ideas as well. Although the novel is a work of fiction, the author may have set the story in a particular time and place for a reason.

Authors likely have to do some research to be sure that their novel is accurate when they refer to actual events in history. They want their story to be believable.

The remainder of the lessons in this theme deal with some of the ways of doing research.

Sometimes when you are doing a research report, you will have a topic assigned. Sometimes you will be able to choose the topic you want to write about. In either case, you will still need to spend some time thinking about your topic and deciding which ideas to include or develop in your report.

Brainstorming, as the name suggests, is a technique for getting as many of our ideas as possible down on paper so we can choose the best idea from them to write a report that will be interesting for the writer and reader.

Brainstorming can be done in several ways. You might just jot ideas about the topic down as they come to mind, or you might use a web similar to the one below to sort out your ideas.
