STRUCTURE AND MEANING

There are many ways of structuring your ideas when you write an essay. Pablo Neruda told the story of the swan in chronological order. He started at the beginning with the shooting of the swan and ended his essay with the swan's death. Why did he tell his story in this way?

By ending with the death of the swan, he is able to emphasize the terrible grief of the swan and the grief he himself experienced at its death. His response creates a strong impact on the reader and stresses how disturbing the shooting of the beautiful swan was. If he had organized his story in a different way, the impact of the essay would also have been different.

Another way he could have structured his content was by creating a thesis and then defending it with facts and incidents such as the grief of the swan. If he had organized his essay in that way, it would have had a far different impact on the reader and likely have been less engaging, although perhaps more informative.
