Lesson 1: Management Functions

Leading

Assume that the business's plan is clear and well-organized.

The next step is leading, or the process of putting the organizational structure and plan into operation.

While watching the video Leaders vs. Managers, consider how a manager can be a good leader.

Communication is key when managing people to achieve a goal or objective. Constructive communication leads to greater understanding of the business goals and gives employees opportunities to make suggestions and feel significant in day-to-day operations. A good leader must listen, know, and support his or her staff, problem-solve, give advice, and reinforce productivity. Through correction procedures, errors can be turned into learning experiences.

Why is Leading Important?

Leading is a very important function of managers because they are responsible for training, guiding, and motivating staff. Managers co-ordinate activities and organize teams to ensure plans are completed to achieve business goals or objectives.

Successful managers combine common sense with elements from various management theories to develop their own leadership styles. Various management theories are explored later in this section.
