Selective distribution: Producers use some of the available outlets to distribute their products. Customer preference for a particular product is more important than availability.

Selective distribution is most appropriate for durable goods that consumers do not purchase regularly (e.g., television sets). Sonyยฎ television sets are sold at some furniture and electronic stores, but not all.

Products suited to selective distribution must be different enough from the alternatives to hold their places in the market. The differences may not be in the actual product, but they may be in customer service or environment.

These products are more expensive than convenience goods. Consumers tend to visit several stores to compare product prices, features, designs, and styles. They may also complete product research online (e.g., Wayfair.ca, bestbuy.ca). Customer preference for a particular product is more important than availability.

Often, producters use a company-owned retail outlet (e.g., The Apple Store), so they can control environmental and service factors.
