Between 1995 and 2008, Canada exported more than it imported. During that time Canada had a trade surplus (or a positive balance of trade). The state of trade changed with the global recession in 2008. In 2016, Canada imported more than it
exported. Canada had a trade deficit (or negative balance of trade).
The trade situation is showing improvement. Between 2011 and 2016, Canada's annual imports showed a steady decrease. Canada is relying less on goods imported from other countries.
