Lesson 4: Hazards and Risk Controls

Lesson 4: Hazard and Risk Controls
Once a hazard has been identified, Element Three of a Health and Safety Management System, allows for a control measure to be developed for each hazard that has been identified.
Ideally, hazards would be completely eliminated, however when this is not possible, they must be controlled.
Controlling hazards means to reduce the hazard to a level that does not present a significant risk to worker health or safety.
There are a number of controls that can be implemented; these will be explored fully in Unit 2.
Think About It
Controlling Hazards
Scenario: In Lesson 3, you were asked to go to your Science Lab to identify any hazards in the room. Think of the hazards that you identified; consider the control options for the hazards you identified.
-
viruses, bacteria, chemicals
- control measure might be to wear safety goggles and/or a mask
- fumes, mists, vapours - control measure might be to wear safety goggles and/or a mask
-
temperature, lighting - ensure appropriate temperature and lighting are in place
- moving parts of machinery - a control measure might be to ensure there is a safety manual for the machinery, that proper safety equipment is worn and/or that safety guards are working properly
-
slipping, tripping
- a control measure might be a safety mat or wearing special footwear
