Lesson 6: Worker Competency and Training


Element Five is comprised of a worker's qualifications, orientation and training; workers need to know how to do their jobs safely and without risk to their health.
  • specific credentials to do certain work
  • examples of qualifications include: Class 1 Drivers License, Journeyman certification, Office Administration diploma, Health Care Certificate, etc.
  • introducing new workers to the organization
  • an overview of the organization's Health and Safety Management System
  • a review of the company rules and an outline of the worker and employer responsibilities
  • explanation of how to report hazards and injuries
  • showing new workers the First Aid area/supplies and explaining the Emergency Response Plan
  • providing the worker with information about how to perform the job activities
  • formal training, classroom training and/or on the job training
  • monitoring the workers' progress to ensure the worker understands the training and follows the procedures
  • ensuring that workers are trained in the safe use of any equipment they are required to operate; the Occupational Health and Safety Regulation states that employers are responsible for this training
  • keeping a record of all training that is required to do a certain job, including the date, the workers' name who took the training and the training provided
