Lesson 7: Biological Hazards

Biological Hazards

When learning about Biological Hazards, it's important to know that:

  • Biological Hazards are organisms that present a health hazard to humans.

  • Biological Hazards can be found anywhere in the environment.

  • The most common Biological Hazards include bacteria, viruses and fungi.

  • Jobs in Agriculture expose workers to a wide variety of biological hazards, from jobs such as landscaping, mowing lawns and farming.

  • Zoonoses is the term used when diseases are passed from animals to humans; this means that an animal infected with a biological hazard can spread it to humans.

Sneezing can transfer biological hazards from one person to another.

  • Insects often cause allergic reactions due to their bites or stings; they can also transfer bacteria and viruses that cause diseases

  • Plant materials can be hazardous in that some are allergenic or poisonous (poison ivy)

  • Fungi and mold are often hazardous features of wet or damp materials

  • Viruses and bacteria are often unseen hazards encountered through contact with living organisms (mosquitoes, birds, rodents) or materials (waste materials)
