  1. Identify legislation related to the workplace. 
  2. Demonstrate basic competencies.
  3. Create a strategy to identify personal changes and build personal values
  1. Research and understand the Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) Act, Regulation and Code.
  2. Research and understand the Workers'' Compensation Act.
  3. Research and understand the Employment Standards Code. 
  4. Describe the roles and responsibilities of both employers and workers in each of the three legislative bodies. 
  5. Understand the difference between a worker and an employer.  
  6. Demonstrate fundamental, personal management and teamwork skills.
  7. Identify short-term and long-term goals and the steps to achieve those goals.

Key Concepts 

  •  Government legislation and regulations are needed so that risks are minimized
  • The legislation exists to ensure fair, safe, and healthy workplaces
  • Every province in Canada has government acts, regulations and codes/guidelines to and increase safety in the workplace
  • These acts, regulations, and codes/guidelines determine the laws, regulations, and rules for the behaviour of employers and employees in most work situations
  •  When it comes to worksite safety, the primary responsibility of governments is to enact laws
  •  Governments are also responsible for workplace inspections
  • The enforcement of occupational health and safety legislation is also the responsibility of each government
  •  The government is also responsible for giving out information and promoting training, education, and research
  •  When there are OH&S disputes, it is the responsibility of each government to resolve those disputes
