Lesson 9: Employment Standards Codes and Regulations
The ESC and ESR - Overview
- The Employment Standards Branch administers the Employment Standards Code (ESC) and Employment Standards Regulation (ESR).
- The Employment Standards Code (ESC) and the Employment Standards Regulation (ESR) form the law that consists of Alberta's basic rules about working and employing people.
-
Employees and employers have rights and responsibilities under the ESC and ESR, both of which are administered by Alberta Human Resources and Employment.
- Employment Standards Officers enforce the provisions of the ESC and ESR.
- Workers employed by the federal government or in an industry regulated by the Government of Canada (notably post offices, railways, banks, radio and television companies) are not covered by the ESC; they are covered by the federal Canada Labor Code.
Two Important Notes for Students!!
- The Employment Standards Code also applies to students, whether they work full-time or part-time, as long as they are employed.
- Students under the age of 16 are not permitted to be employed during normal school hours, unless they are enrolled in an off-campus education program under the School Act (for example, Work Experience)
