Answers to Questions:
Question 1. On average, how much trash does each person in Canada throw out each day?
On average, each person in Canada throws out about 2.2 kg of trash each day.
Question 2. On average, how much trash does each person in Canada throw out each year?
You have to calculate this answer.
2.2 kg/day times 365 days/year equals 803 kg of trash.
Do you think you throw out this much trash each year? Most people say they do not throw out nearly that much; obviously, some throw out less but others throw out more.
Question 3. Do you think that using concentrated products would help reduce this amount of garbage? Explain.
According to the information, 30% of the waste is product packaging. Using concentrated products, which use less packaging, would definitely reduce the amount of garbage thrown into landfills. (Remember recycling, too!)

1. You would add solvent to make a dilute solution from a concentrated solution.
2. The first graph, A, shows a solution that is becoming more concentrated. Graph B is incorrect. You cannot have the amount of solute increasing and the concentration decreasing as a result.
3. You mix instant coffee with hot water for two reasons. First, people usually drink coffee hot. Second, instant coffee dissolves easily in hot water but not so easily in cold water. If you have instant coffee, try dissolving a teaspoon of it in a cup of cold water.
4. One advantage of buying concentrated products rather than dilute products is that the cost of the product is less. You save money. Another advantage is that you will help protect the environment because concentrated products use less packaging and the result is less waste.
