Answer the Check Your Understanding questions 1, 2 and 4 on page 101 in your textbook. Then, check your answers with the following.

Answers to Check Your Understanding questions.

Question 1.
The heating element transfers heat to the pot by conduction.
The pot transfers heat to the water by conduction.
The water transfers heat by both conduction and convection.

Question 2. "
The heating element transfers heat to the air in the oven by conduction.
The the air transfers heat throughout the oven by convection.
The the air transfers heat to the walls of the oven, the bread, and the bread pan by conduction.
The the walls of the oven radiate heat that is absorbed by the bread and the bread pan.
The bread pan conducts heat to the bread in the bread pan.

Question 4. Gasoline engines may be liquid-cooled or air-cooled.  Liquid-cooled uses a coolant, radiator, and fan.  Air-cooled uses fins on the motor itself and a fan.

Answer questions 1 to 5 and 8 to 10 on pages 102 and 103 of your textbook.

Question 1. a. heat
b.
temperature
c. kinetic energy
d.
conduction
e. friction
f.
Robert Brown
g. convection
h.
radiation
i. land breeze
j. moderate
k.
sea breeze
l. Brownian motion

Question 2. Robert Brown's theory of heat was that heat is due to the motion of the particles in a substance.

Question 3. Although the temperature is the same, the particles of water are not vibrating at the same speed; some are moving fast, some are moving slow.  Temperature is a measure of the average speed of the particles.

Question 4. a. convection and radiation
b.
radiation
c. conduction

Question 5. Land breezes are breezes that blow from the land to the water.  This happens because in the evening the land cools faster than the water.  The cool air above the land blows towards the water to replace the warm air over the water that is rising.

Question 8. a.  The flag will blow toward the land because there is a sea breeze.
b.  The flag will blow toward the water because there is a land breeze.

Question 9. The object that is at 40°C has the greater average kinetic energy because temperature is a measure of the average kinetic energy.

Question 10. The particles in both objects have the same average kinetic energy because the temperatures are the same.  The larger object has more heat because the temperature is the same and the larger object has more particles.
