You now know that nutrients are substances found in food that provide nourishment to living things.  What are the important nutrients your body needs?  Read "What Nutrients Do We Need" on page 199 in your textbook as well as the information in the diagrams and the "Reading Check".

Question 1. Which nutrients does your body need?

The six nutrients are:

  • carbohydrates

  • proteins

  • fats

  • vitamins

  • minerals

  • water
     

Question 2. What is the primary source of energy in your body?

The primary source of energy in your body is carbohydrates ( in the form of sugars and starches.

Question 3. How is it possible to be overweight and malnourished?

It is possible to consume too much food that does not provide the proper nutrients required.  For example the foods might be deficient in vitamins and minerals while being high in fats and carbohydrates.

Question 4. The child in figure 10.2 suffers from malnutrition.  What important nutrient is missing from this child's diet?

The normal hair colour has changed to red indicating a lack of protein.
