Carbohydrates are an important nutrient.  Carbohydrates is the name for sugars and starches.  Sugars are also an important nutrient in your diet.  What is the test for sugar?

Answers to Questions:

Question 1. What chemical is used to test for sugar in a food?

Benedict's solution is used to test for sugar. 

Question 2. Explain how the test is performed.

Add a few drops of Benedict's solution to the food (the food should be in solution if it is not a liquid).  Then, heat the test tube and record any colour changes.

Question 3. What happens in the test if sugar is in a food?

If sugar is in the food, the blue colour of the Benedict's solution will turn to green or orange.
