Lesson 1.2: Homeostasis in the Body

You will now look at six key parts of homeostasis in your body.

Read the information on page 217 in your textbook. Then, answer the following questions.

Question 1. What controls the release of energy from food molecules in the cells of the body?

Question 2. What controls the glucose concentrations in the blood?

Question 3. How does the body remove toxic wastes from the blood?

Question 4. How does your body remove carbon dioxide from the body?

Question 5. Why does the heart beat faster in times of high activity or stress?

Question 6. What percent of a human body is composed of water?

Answers to Questions:

Question 1. What controls the release of energy from food molecules in the cells of the body?

Enzymes control the release of energy from food molecules in the cells of the body.

Question 2. What controls the glucose concentrations in the blood?

Insulin controls the glucose concentrations in the blood.

Question 3. How does the body remove toxic wastes from the blood?

The body removes toxic wastes from the blood by filtering the blood through the kidneys.

Question 4. How does your body remove carbon dioxide from the body?

Your body removes carbon dioxide from the body through your respiratory system.  When you exhale, excess carbon dioxide is eliminated.

Question 5. Why does the heart beat faster in times of high activity or stress?

The heart beats faster in times of high activity or stress to circulate more blood to deliver the necessary nutrients and oxygen to the cells.  This was not mentioned in the reading, but more blood flow is also necessary to remove the waste products of the cells.  (You are expected to know this extra information.)

Question 6. What percent of a human body is composed of water?

65-70% of your body is water.

Question 7. What influences the mineral and water balance in your body?

Special hormones influence the mineral and water balance in your body.

Question 8. What are the six substances e present in the blood?

The six substances present in the blood are

        • oxygen
        • carbon dioxide
        • glucose
        • minerals
        • vitamins
        • wastes
