Lesson 1.1 - What is Energy?

Energy comes in many forms.  The energy that you need to move is in a different form than the energy that a car needs.  You have already learned how plants store energy and how cellular respiration releases this energy.

Read What is Energy? and Energy comes from the Sun on page 238. Then, answer the following questions.

Question 1. What is energy?

Question 2. Where do people get their energy?

Question 3. Can energy be created or destroyed?

Question 4. What three food grains provide most of the food energy for people?

Question 5. What is the name of the process by which plants capture and store light energy from the sun?

Question 6. What are the reactants in photosynthesis?

Question 7. What are the products of photosynthesis?

Question 8. What is the name of the process by which living things transform the chemical energy stored in glucose into a form that they use in life processes?

Question 9. What are the reactants in cellular respiration?

Question 10. What are the products of cellular respiration?

Answers to Questions:

Question 1. What is energy?

Energy was defined in an earlier lesson as the ability to do work.  The definition is further expanded here to mean the ability to move, to do work, or cause changes.

Question 2. Where do people get their energy?

People get their energy from the food they eat.

Question 3. Can energy be created or destroyed?

Energy cannot be created or destroyed.  Energy can be transformed from one form to another or transferred from one object to another.

Question 4. What three food grains provide most of the food energy for people?

Wheat, rice, and corn provide over half of the food energy needs of people.

Question 5. What is the name of the process by which plants capture and store light energy from the sun?

The process by which plants capture and store light energy from the sun is photosynthesis.

Question 6. What are the reactants in photosynthesis?

The reactants in photosynthesis are carbon dioxide, water, and light energy from the sun.

Question 7. What are the products of photosynthesis?

The products of photosynthesis are glucose and oxygen.

Question 8. What is the name of the process by which living things transform the chemical energy stored in glucose into a form that they use in life processes?

The name of the process by which living things transform the chemical energy stored in glucose into a form that they use in life processes is called cellular respiration.

Question 9. What are the reactants in cellular respiration?

The reactants in cellular respiration are glucose and oxygen.

Question 10. What are the products of cellular respiration?

The products of cellular respiration are carbon dioxide, water, and energy.
