Answers to Questions:
Question 1. Why do you think fish trapped in irrigation canals die?
Fish trapped in an irrigation canal will die because of several reasons:
- The water is used to irrigate farm land, so there are pumps that move the water; getting into a pump means certain death for a fish.
- Although the water level may be high at the beginning of a canal, the water level is always going down further from the river because the water is being used on the farms.
- There is little water, little food, and likely little oxygen in the canal water.
- Although the fish could survive the summer, the canals will be dry in the fall.
Question 2. How do these fish get into the irrigation canals?
The fish can get into the canal by swimming through any open gates when water is being taken from the river. If the water is pumped into the canal, there is no chance the fish will get in. Another way the fish can get in is during a flood when the water from the river flows over the canal sides.Â
