Lesson 2.2 - Location and Climate

A bar graph of the information provides an an overview of precipitation that is easily read.  If you wish to plot the total monthly precipitation for a certain city, you should put the months along the horizontal axis.  Then, after you determine the maximum precipitation for the month with the most precipitation, you make a scale in equal intervals from 0 to the highest amount.  The numbers along the vertical axis should be in even units such as by tens so the plotting and the reading of the graph is easy.  Do not forget to title the graph.  A sample bar graph is made for you in the self-check question below.  The assignment asks you for a different bar graph. Remember that every graph should have a title.

Along the vertical axis of the line graph to show temperatures, decide start at 0 at the origin and put the quantities in equal intervals after you know the maximum you will reach.  For the horizontal axis of line graphs, you decide what you want to graph and use equal units from beginning to end.  To graph temperature, you will use the months along the horizontal axis. When all the points are plotted, draw a line to connect all points.  A sample line graph is given in the self-check question below.  The assignment asks for a different line graph.

Read the activity on Location and Climate on page 277 of your textbook.  Below, you will see temperature and precipitation data for Fort Chipewyan and Manyberries, both in Alberta.
