Lesson 3.2 - Comparing Soil

The type of soil in a region depends on the rainfall as well as the climate and the vegetation.  Forest soil has more rainfall than grassland soil.  And grassland soil has more rainfall than desert soil.  Where the rainfall is very limited such as in a desert, the amount of humus is also limited because little plant and animal life grows there.

Answers to Questions:

Question 1. Answer Check Your Understanding question 3 from page 280 of your textbook.

Much rain produces much plant growth, which results in much humus.  Also, with much rain, minerals move to the middle, leaving a thin layer of top soil.  With less rain, the topsoil is deep and grasses grow well.  With almost no rain, little humus is produced and little life is supported.
