Theme 1: Introduction

Nationalism and Identity

In this theme, you will learn what nationalism is and how it can be expressed. You will learn about terms that define our nation and the people who live here. You will also develop an understanding of the cultures of Canada's First Nations people. You will see how strong and well organized these cultures were before the arrival of European explorers, traders, and settlers. You will learn that Aboriginal cultures were based on important connections to elders and spirituality.

Then you will learn that the arrival of Europeans set in motion changes that had major impacts on the traditional ways of life of Aboriginal peoples. To end this theme, you will examine how Aboriginal peoples continue to work toward healing the wounds of the past and re-establishing pride in their collective identities.
