Theme 2: Review


Theme 2 focused on developing an understanding of, and appreciation for, the process by which Canada evolved into the nation it is today.

You learned about the two European nations that settled our land. You also saw how conflicts that occurred both within Canada and in other nations influenced the settlement and development of the nation. In addition to conflict, you examined how discussion and negotiation were very important in Canada's progress. You also learned about other cultures that were important to the development of our country. Finally, you learned about the policies that the Government of Canada has implemented in order to promote national unity.       



In Theme 2, you:


  • learned the first European settlers were both British and French
  • learned that Britain gained control of Canada as a result of wars with France
  • learned that Britain managed the French citizens by recognizing and supporting their French culture
  • understood that three main conflicts played an important role in Canada's growth and development into a nation
  • learned that the American Revolution meant that Britain had to govern British and French settlers in Canada, both of whom had remained loyal
  • learned that the War of 1812 against the United States challenged the young colony and created a sense of pride among its citizens
  • learned that the Rebellions of 1837 broke out in Canada when both French and British citizens wanted more independence
  • learned that discussion and negotiation were important in Canada's growth and development
  • learned that the Durham Report, the Act of Union, and the British North America Act were all important steps towards nationhood
  • learned about another very significant group of people in Canada called the MΓ©tis
  • learned that people immigrated to Canada from all over the world, bringing their own cultures
  • learned about the policies of bilingualism and multiculturalism
