  Why are wars fought?


Before you learn about how nations have responded to ultranationalism by going to war, you will learn the history of warfare and look at Canada's role in the First World War.



In this lesson, you will:

  • learn that wars are fought for survival when people fear the loss of resources to meet their basic physical needs

  • learn that wars are fought for expansion when a group wants to expand its territory for power or to access resources from another region

  • learn that wars are fought for protection when groups or nations have to defend themselves or their possessions
