Lesson 20 — Activity 2:
What Makes a "Have" Country?
What Makes a "Have" Country?
Warm Up
Now you know that countries all around the world have different levels of wealth. In this activity, you will understand the criteria that defines a "have" country and learn which nations are included in this group.
What does it mean to be a "have" country? Simply put, this is a country that has a lot of wealth. These are also countries that you would call developed countries. A developed country is a country that has a highly developed economy and advanced technological infrastructure compared to other less-industrialized nations. Canada and the United States are both examples of a developed (or "have") country.
Take a look below at the developed (or have) countries around the world (they are in blue). As you can see, the developed countries include Canada, the United States, the United Kingdom (including England, Scotland, Wales, and Ireland), Australia, South Africa, Japan, and many countries in Europe (including France, Germany, Spain, Italy).

In modern society, people need money to meet their basic needs of food, water, shelter, and clothing. In developed countries, the more money people make, the easier they can meet their basic needs.

The more money
people make, the higher their standard of living. Most people in have
countries have a high standard of living. The standard of living refers
to the quality and quantity of goods and services available to people
and the way these services and goods are distributed within a
population. It is mainly measured in terms of money.
Other measures are often used, too, such as access to and quality of health care, educational standards, and social rights. Standard of living is the ease by which people living in a country are able to satisfy their needs. Another key measure of standard of living is the average age to which a person can expect to live. In developed nations, one's life expectancy is in the late seventies.
Look at the map below. It shows the life expectancy of countries around the world. Click on the "+" sign to see a larger image. As you can see, Canada and the United States have a life expectancy of +76 years. Most countries in Africa have a life expectancy of only 59 years of age or less.

Take a look at the web below. It shows the things that are included when we talk about our standard of living.

Many people in developed nations have money left over after meeting their basic needs. This allows them to buy goods and engage in activities for pleasure. In other words, people in wealthy nations have money to spend on their wants, not just their needs.
Many of the things people in wealthy nations consider essential are not basic needs of survival. Although one could argue that a refrigerator and stove are somewhat basic needs, a dishwasher is not. It would be difficult for most Canadians to imagine their lives without a television, but this is not necessary to sustain life.
Canada is definitely a have nation. Although some people in Canada are poor, most Canadians earn enough money to meet their basic needs. Although vast differences of wealth occur within Canada, most people have enough money left after meeting their basic needs to spend on items and activities to improve their quality of life.
For people who
are unable to earn enough money to meet their basic needs, Canada has
programs to help them afford food, shelter, and clothing. Everyone in
Canada has access to a good education and universal health care. These
are called social programs and include things such as employment
insurance, disability pensions, and social assistance. In a wealthy
nation such as Canada, most people have the opportunity to rise above
poverty, however, this is not always easy.
