Lesson 21 — Activity 3:
Individuals Can Help
Individuals Can Help
Warm Up
In this activity, you will realize that much of the aid that is given to nations in need comes from individuals who donate money, time, and effort through various organizations.
Foreign aid that is offered by the Canadian government is financed through taxes that all working Canadians pay. In addition to these funds, individuals and corporations contribute additional support through numerous organizations. Some of the organizations that are committed to helping are presented in a later lesson. This lesson shows various ways in which ordinary people can help.
People can hep by giving donations to groups, such as the Red Cross, to support disaster relief efforts.
For example, millions of Canadian citizens and companies donated over $100 million dollars to support victims of the 2016 wildfires in Fort McMurray, Alberta.

People can also raise money to support foreign aid programs.
For example, some school students organize "change drives." They ask other students to bring in change such as loonies and quarters to give to aid organizations.
Individuals can also volunteer to work in a poor country for a period of time.
People with skills such as trades people and experienced farmers can provide and teach much needed skills and knowledge to the people in these countries.

Other volunteers include professionals such as doctors, nurses, and teachers. These individuals not only provide care and services to those who need them, but they also teach people who can then continue their work.
People can also help by sending supplies to those in need.
A good example of this is the "Operation Christmas Child" program. People participating in this program put together gift boxes to send to less fortunate children around the world. The Canadian government pays for the air force to deliver them.

An individual can also sponsor a child in a developed and undeveloped countries.
Several organizations set up these sponsorship programs that allow people to sponsor a specific child and send letters and pictures back and forth. The money that is sent to sponsor the child pays for school, food, health care, and clothes. Usually, the child's whole family benefits from this sponsorship.
As you can see, there are many different ways that individuals can get involved in helping people in need all around the world. In the next activity, you will learn about some of the organizations that are committed to helping people in the world's poor countries to improve their standard of living and quality of life.
