Theme 5: Review

This theme focused on Canada's role within the world. Many of the lessons also focused on foreign aid programs. Foreign aid programs are necessary due to the unequal distribution of the world's wealth. There are various circumstances under which foreign aid is needed, and nations face many challenges in delivering foreign aid.

To better understand the distribution of wealth, you also learned some of the ways in which wealth is measured. The criteria that identifies a country as a have, have-not, or developing nation were presented. The next step was to understand foreign aid and realize why it is necessary.

As with many situations, foreign aid programs have both pros and cons. In addition, there are hurdles that must be overcome to deliver foreign aid to those in need, regardless of the reasons for the need. Some needs are immediate, while others are long-term, with the final goal being to develop independence.

Foreign aid benefits both those giving it and those receiving it. Aid is financed by governments, non-government organizations, and private individuals. Supporters maintain that a world without foreign aid would be a dangerous one.

Canada is a nation that supports foreign aid. We have a reputation as a humanitarian nation, one that relies on negotiation to resolve conflicts. These negotiation skills are sometimes used to resolve conflicts between others. The lessons presented just some of the specific foreign aid programs and projects in which Canada participates.
