Lesson 2: Establishing Rapport in a Social Venue

Conversation

Whether in a social setting or in a business situation, the initial welcome statement can help get attention and establish positive rapport. A friendly greeting is essential.  You want to be liked, trusted, and listened to. Individuals are reactive and they will respond to what you give them. Greet every person that you meet with the same welcoming friendly manner.

As a salesperson, you want the customer to be at ease and to set the tone for the remainder of the interaction. Some tips for when people enter your establishment follow:

  • Never walk directly towards a potential customer.
  • Do not rush.
  • Make your presence known.
  • Get out of the way.
  • Let them look around.
  • Let intuition, body language, or speech guide you.
  • Be attentive without stalking the customer.
